Top 10 FREE Linux Games out there!

Posted by Pete on November 8th, 2006

If your a linux user (or not), you may or may not know what games are available for it. Found this great Top 10 list of free games available for the linux platform.

So how does a game make this top 10 list? Well, from 10 - 1, they have all been listed according to how many votes the game received. Though there were around 50 games total that were brought up in forum posts, most only had a single vote. Even our #10 had only four votes, so it’s obvious that the top games are there for a reason. In order to qualify for the list, the game had to meet these requirements:

  • Has to be 100% free… no strings attached.
  • Cannot require wine to run.
  • Open Source not a requirement.
  • Installation must be painless.
  • Cannot be an add-on to a commercial game.

So which is the fastest browser of all?

Posted by Pete on November 7th, 2006

There seems to be many claims as to which browser is the fastest. I myself play around with 3 operating systems and browsers act differently depending on what you’re using. Today I found a very complete comparison of browsers and speed tests that actually show some interesting results complete with charts!

In order to test each browser’s speed response, I put them through a number of tests. Each test has a careful set of rules to make sure that I give unbiased results. Each set of tests are grouped by platform, and for each platform, I use just one computer to ensure that the tests compare just the browsers, and not the hardware or software they run on. Each test is done with a default browser install, without tweaking any settings (I know that many browsers perform slightly better if you tweak their network settings, but this is intended to be a test of a standard browser install - some people also suggest that using a native skin makes a browser faster, but I got virtually identical results with native and non-native skins). With Browsers that also offer email or news features, I enabled these clients, but did not have any email or news items in them (some of them may perform differently if they did, but that is not what I was trying to test).

Gmail adds a more usable feature by applying reply boxes on the top right corner of each email with a more options arrow. Google has been kickin ass with all the new features on Gmail these past couple of weeks including the release of thier new Gmail app for mobile phones.

Forward all
When viewing a conversation, use the new “Forward all” link on the right if you want to forward the entire conversation instead of just one message.

Chat even when your friends are offline
Chatting in Gmail just keeps getting better. Now, if you’re chatting with a friend who goes offline, your friend will be able to see whatever you were typing the next time he or she goes online.
