A great list of 101 Shareware and Freeware programs for everyone!

Posted by Pete on March 28th, 2007

And I’m back after enjoying a beautiful day of weather yesterday! Coming back I did find a fantastic list of applications that I wanted to share.

Lots of the programs in this list are ones I already use, but I did find quite a few that I’ve now added after reading this great list of free apps.
There are about 5 or 6 programs listed per topic. And some of the listed programs also have different OS versions (Linux/Mac).
Couple applications that I do use aren’t on the list, I’m a big fan of Google Talk and Skype for voip service ($30 a year and I get unlimited calling!).

Topics covered:

Audio | Browsers | Compression | Desktop Enhancements | Download/Upload Clients | E-Mail Tools | FAX and Telephony | Graphics & Photo | Internet (Surfing) | iPod Tools | MySQL Database Tools | Networking | Office Productivity | Personal Finance | Programmers | Security | System Utilities | Tweaks | Web Authors/Owners

McDonald’s Chicken McNuggets contain butane?

Posted by Pete on March 23rd, 2007

Much to my surprise, after reading about the 38 ingredients in a single Chicken McNugget, I’m not that shocked that something like TBHQ is found in it. I mean, come on!

Have you ever looked at a Chicken McNugget before? It’s not exactly screaming out, “Hey look at me, I’m made of Chicken!”

But perhaps the most alarming ingredient in a Chicken McNugget is tertiary butylhydroquinone, or TBHQ, an antioxidant derived from petroleum that is either sprayed directly on the nugget or the inside of the box it comes in to “help preserve freshness.” According to A Consumer’s Dictionary of Food Additives, TBHQ is a form of butane (i.e. lighter fluid)…

Google Personalized homepage now has themes!

Posted by Pete on March 20th, 2007

Google just added 6 themes to the personalized homepage!Google Personalized
Looking forward to seeing more of them, but I really like the subtle themes they have available! All themes available are dynamic! They change with the time of day and weather in your area. Really cool!

Today we’re releasing six themes for the personalized homepage that try to solve these challenges: a city, a teahouse (super cute — this one is my favorite), a winter scene, a sky, a beach and a bus stop. All of our themes are dynamic: they change with your own local time of day, current weather conditions or season. If you add the beach theme, for example (changes with time of day), it will ask you for your Zip code and adjust itself to match your local sunrise and sunset times. So if you happen to be stuck in a windowless office, you can at least crack open a cold one and watch the sun set over your desktop.

phpBB with a new design!

Posted by Pete on March 19th, 2007

phpBB community has redesigned their site and are also utilizing their new 3.0 beta. Nice to see them finally put out a release for 3.0, I’m guessing they’ve decided this because of stability on their new version. Time will tell.
I’ll be setting a few of these up on my other sites to see how it compares to the 2.0+ series.

Since its creation in 2000, phpBB has become the most widely used Open Source forum solution. Like its predecessors, phpBB 3.0 “Olympus” has an easy to use administration panel and a user friendly installation process, which allows you to have a forum set up in minutes.

How to make your blog more visible.

Posted by Pete on March 17th, 2007

Darren has put together a project that will help us little blogs get the word out. What he’s doing is sharing his techniques of promotion, site stats and supplying a how-to of the best and creative ways to get your blog out there.
I’ll definitely be following along as I know I can use some help.

For this project to work I need bloggers to participate by leaving comments and sharing their experiences. There’s no hidden agenda, I don’t have a book to promote or service to sell – I’m just a normal blogger trying to earn an income from blogging.

Update:
An example of one of the techniques used, How to promote your blog to video sites like YouTube.

Ubuntu.com gets a facelift!

Posted by Pete on March 16th, 2007

Ubuntu is sporting a new design on it’s main site and I think it looks great!
They really put together a nice collection of colors and the style is smooth like buttah!

I use Ubuntu on my laptop (dual-boot) and I rarely choose the Windows OS. I find that it covers my everyday activities just fine. This includes email, web browsing, instant messaging (skype, google talk, aim), listening to music, and the list goes on and on. It’s one of the easiest installs to date and I’m loving it!  You should give it a try if you’re feeling like you need a change for the better.
